Understanding the Difference

Choosing the right coverage does not have to be complicated. We believe in providing clarity so you can make an informed decision for your household.

Term Life: Protection For A Defined Period
Current coverageEnrollment windowEffective date

Term life insurance pays a death benefit for a covered death during the policy term. It may fit a time-limited need, such as income support while children grow up or a mortgage is being repaid. It generally does not build cash value.

Compare the term, premium guarantees, renewal costs and any conversion deadline. Availability and pricing depend on underwriting. Explore term life insurance.

Permanent coverage: understand the differences

Permanent life insurance is designed for longer-term needs, provided the policy’s funding and other requirements are met. It usually costs more than term coverage for the same initial death benefit.

Whole Life: predictable coverage for a lasting need

Whole Life typically provides a specified premium, death benefit and guaranteed cash value schedule under the contract. It may suit someone who wants coverage for final expenses or a legacy and can maintain the required premiums over time. Dividends, if offered, are not guaranteed. Explore Whole Life.

Ask before choosing: How long must I pay premiums? What values are guaranteed? What happens if I stop paying early? Compare the premium commitment and surrender values with your budget—not only the illustrated future value.

IUL: understand the credits, costs and funding

Indexed universal life has interest-crediting features tied to an index formula; it is not a direct investment in an index. Caps, participation rates, charges and funding affect results. A crediting floor does not prevent policy value from falling because of charges. Explore IUL’s costs, funding needs and risks.

Survivorship: a benefit after the second death

Survivorship life insurance generally covers two people and pays the death benefit after the second insured dies. It is a coverage structure, not a synonym for Whole Life; the underlying policy may be universal or indexed universal life.

It may suit a couple planning a legacy, estate liquidity or an inheritance for beneficiaries. It generally does not provide a death benefit when the first insured dies, so separately consider the surviving partner’s income and debts. Compare it with individual policies before deciding. Explore survivorship life insurance.

Ask before choosing: Who should own the policy? Who are the beneficiaries? How will premiums be funded if one person dies first? Work with your attorney and tax adviser on ownership, trusts and estate consequences. Explore estate funding.

Loans and withdrawals can reduce policy values and death benefits, create lapse risk and have tax consequences. Review contractual guarantees separately from non-guaranteed illustrations. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer’s claims-paying ability. Products and riders depend on state availability, underwriting and Anil’s licensing and appointments.

When Should You Review Your Coverage?
Coverage choicesCosts and accessQuestions to ask

When should you review your coverage?

A new child, marriage, home purchase, business change or approaching retirement can change what you need. Review existing coverage before assuming you need more.

Workplace coverage may change or end when employment changes; check your plan’s continuation and conversion provisions. Individual coverage has its own premiums, policy conditions and exclusions. Life insurance does not automatically replace income during sickness or disability.

Start with your needs and budget

Bring an estimate of household income needs, debts, education goals, final expenses and existing coverage. Include the value of unpaid caregiving, not only salary. Discuss how long support may be needed and what premiums you can comfortably maintain.

Anil explains insurance options and underwriting. A request is not a promise of approval, a specific premium or a guaranteed financial outcome.

Questions To Ask Before Choosing A Policy
Gather informationCompare choicesAsk questions
  • What is guaranteed, for how long, and under which conditions?
  • Can premiums or charges change, and what could cause coverage to lapse?
  • What exclusions, waiting periods or rider requirements apply?
  • How do loans, withdrawals or surrender affect the policy?

Do not cancel existing coverage before reviewing replacement consequences and confirming any new coverage is in force. Read the NAIC life insurance overview.

Keep beneficiaries aligned with your wishes

Name primary and contingent beneficiaries and review them after important family changes. Ask how the insurer handles a minor beneficiary or a trust, and coordinate estate questions with your attorney. Policy terms and applicable law affect how a claim is paid.

Business owners have separate questions: key person insurance addresses the business impact of a loss, while buy-sell funding supports an ownership transfer. Explore related estate funding topics.
