Security When You Cannot Work

If an illness or injury prevents you from working, household expenses can continue even when your paycheck stops. Disability income insurance may replace part of your income when you meet the policy's definition of disability. Anil Khanchandani, CLTC®, helps you understand available insurance options, their costs and their limits.

How Disability Insurance Works

Many people believe that workers compensation or social security will cover them, but these programs often have strict limits or long waiting periods. A private disability policy is a personal safety net that you control.

Short Term Disability

Short-term disability insurance may replace a portion of your income for a limited period after a covered illness or injury. Benefits begin only after the policy's applicable waiting period and other claim requirements are met; they are not necessarily immediate. Benefit amounts, duration, exclusions and eligibility vary by policy.

Key benefit: Temporary income support for an eligible covered disability.

Long Term Disability

Long-term disability insurance may pay a monthly benefit after its elimination period when you meet the policy's definition of disability. Depending on the contract, benefits may continue for a set number of years or to a specified age, while eligibility requirements continue to be met. Offsets for other benefits, exclusions and coverage limits can affect payments.

Key benefit: Longer-duration income support, subject to policy terms.
