Medicare Supplement (Medigap): Compare Your Options
Medigap helps pay certain deductibles, copayments and coinsurance under Original Medicare. Compare policy benefits, premiums and enrollment protections before you choose.
What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, is private insurance used alongside Original Medicare. It helps pay specified cost-sharing; benefits and limits depend on the policy.
You generally need Part A and Part B. You pay a separate Medigap premium in addition to your Part B premium. Policies with the same letter have the same standardized benefits, but compare the same policy type: standard, high-deductible and Medicare SELECT policies have different conditions. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin standardize policies differently.
With most Medigap policies, you can use doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare. Medicare SELECT policies can require certain hospitals and, in some cases, doctors for full benefits.
Anil Khanchandani can compare available policies from the carriers he represents in states where he is licensed and appointed.
Medigap does not pay Medicare Advantage cost-sharing. Policies sold after 2005 do not include prescription drug coverage; a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan may be needed.
Which Medigap Plan Is Right for You?
The examples below show how benefits and cost-sharing differ. Availability depends on your state and eligibility. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use different standardization rules.
Plan G — Broad Cost-Sharing Benefits
Standard Plan G covers a broad set of Original Medicare cost-sharing benefits. It does not cover every healthcare expense.
What Plan G covers:
- Part A hospital costs and coinsurance
- Part A deductible ($1,736 per benefit period in 2026)
- Part B coinsurance — the 20% you would owe on most outpatient visits
- Part B excess charges
- Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance (days 21–100)
- Hospice care coinsurance
- Foreign travel emergency care (80%, subject to the plan’s deductible and limits)
Standard Plan G helps pay the Original Medicare cost-sharing listed above, but does not cover the Part B annual deductible ($283 in 2026). You still pay your premiums and costs for noncovered services. Policy limits apply, including limits on foreign travel emergency benefits. High-deductible Plan G has a separate deductible before benefits are paid.
Plan N — Benefits and Copayments
Plan N helps pay many Original Medicare costs, with some copayments left to you. Compare actual premiums and expected out-of-pocket costs for your situation.
- Part A hospital costs, coinsurance and deductible
- Part B coinsurance, except copayments of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits without inpatient admission
- Skilled nursing facility and hospice care coinsurance
- Foreign travel emergency care: 80%, subject to the policy deductible and limits
Plan N does not pay the Part B deductible or Part B excess charges. Premiums and noncovered services are separate. Review the insurer’s outline of coverage before applying.
Plans K and L — Shared Costs and Annual Limits
Plans K and L share certain costs with you and have annual limits on covered cost-sharing. Compare quoted premiums rather than assuming either policy will cost less. Premiums and noncovered services are separate.
- Plan K: covers 50% of most Medicare cost-sharing. Out-of-pocket cap: $8,000 per year in 2026.
- Plan L: covers 75% of most Medicare cost-sharing. Out-of-pocket cap: $4,000 per year in 2026.
After you meet your plan’s yearly out-of-pocket limit and the yearly Part B deductible, the plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the calendar year. Review how the shared costs fit your budget before choosing a policy.
What Medigap Does Not Cover
Medigap policies generally do not cover the following:
- Prescription drugs — Medigap policies sold after 2005 do not include drug coverage; you can join a separate Part D plan
- Routine dental, vision, or hearing care
- Hearing aids or eyeglasses
- Long-term care or custodial nursing home care
- Private-duty nursing
Each Medigap policy covers one person only. Couples must each purchase their own separate policy.

When Should You Enroll?
Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months, beginning the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. During it, insurers cannot reject an application for a policy they sell or raise its price because of your health. A pre-existing-condition waiting period can still apply; prior creditable coverage or state protections may reduce it.
This is not the annual October 15–December 7 Medicare enrollment window. Outside your Medigap window, an insurer may use medical underwriting unless a guaranteed issue right or state protection applies. Only qualifying situations, including certain Medicare Advantage trial rights, provide these protections.
Under-65 availability and protections vary by state, age and eligibility. New Jersey residents can check current age-specific policy information with New Jersey SHIP.
Check your rights and deadlines before changing plans. Do not cancel current coverage until replacement coverage is approved and its effective date is confirmed. Review Medicare’s Medigap enrollment guidance.
