MYGA Fixed Annuities & Rate Comparison
FIXED ANNUITY EDUCATION • ANIL KHANCHANDANI, CLTC®
Know the rate. Understand the commitment. Decide whether a MYGA fits your retirement savings.
A multi-year guaranteed annuity (MYGA) is an insurance contract that credits a fixed interest rate for a selected period. It may suit money you can set aside for that period while keeping other funds accessible for everyday expenses and emergencies.
Start with your state, approximate premium and when you may need the money. Anil can explain available options, costs and trade-offs. No insurance consultation or service fees; Anil receives carrier commissions.
Where a MYGA can fit in your savings
A 3-year MYGA can have a shorter guarantee period than some other annuities, but it is still a multi-year insurance commitment. It may be worth considering for funds you can leave untouched for the full term. Keep emergency money and near-term spending needs separate. A MYGA is not an unrestricted short-term savings account.
You might coordinate a maturity date with a planned retirement expense or use several maturities as part of a ladder. A ladder does not remove withdrawal charges within each contract or guarantee future renewal rates. Review the plan alongside other retirement-income sources.
How a MYGA works
- Choose an amount and a term. Confirm minimum premiums, eligibility and state availability.
- The insurer credits the contract rate. Read how interest is calculated and what withdrawals change.
- Review your choices before the term ends. Renewal rules, available withdrawal windows and future rates vary by contract. Set a reminder before renewal.
Could a MYGA fit your situation?
Worth a conversation
- You want a stated rate for a defined period.
- You have a separate emergency reserve.
- A CD is maturing and you want to compare different types of contracts.
- You are comfortable reviewing the insurer, withdrawal rules and tax treatment.
Consider other options first
- You may need most of the money soon.
- This would use your emergency fund.
- You want direct stock-market participation.
- You are replacing a contract without first comparing charges, benefits and tax consequences.

Illustration assumptions: One initial premium, annual compounding at the displayed rate, no withdrawals, no additional deposits, and no deduction for taxes or any applicable charges. Values are rounded and are not a carrier illustration or surrender-value quote. Actual crediting methods, issue-age limits, premium limits and state availability must be confirmed. The calculator accepts $20,000–$10 million for illustration; this is not a statement of carrier eligibility. Inputs do not submit an inquiry or reserve a rate.

Athene state groups: “Other states” means AK, CA, CT, DE, HI, ID, MD, MN, MO, NJ, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TX, UT and WA. New York uses its separate MaxRate NY contract. “Most states” does not establish availability in every other state.
*Athene premium boundary: Athene’s live rate table labels the high band “$100,000+” and the low band “up to $100,000.” Confirm the applicable tier at exactly $100,000 and any qualifying household aggregation before requesting a contract. Additional premiums use a separately declared one-year strategy; they do not automatically receive the initial premium’s multi-year rate.
Issue timing matters: North American’s October 1 notice applies to applications signed or submitted through Annuity e-Biz on or after that date. Athene’s October 14 notice bases its effective date on the contract being in good order and all funds received. F&G states rates may change before issuance. Carrier rules determine the rate actually issued.
MYGA, FIA or a bank CD?
A MYGA and a fixed indexed annuity (FIA) are different insurance options. Select a topic to see what it offers and what to check.
MYGA: know the rate for a selected period
A stated rate can make the accumulation period easier to understand. Nonqualified growth is generally tax-deferred. The trade-off is restricted access: surrender charges, an MVA where applicable, taxes and renewal terms matter.
FIA: growth potential with an index-crediting formula
Possible benefits include index-linked interest without directly owning the index, protection from negative index credits, and optional income features on some contracts. Caps, participation rates or spreads can limit credits; renewal terms may change. A zero index-credit floor does not eliminate charges or withdrawal losses. Optional riders may cost extra. FIA returns are not a guaranteed MYGA rate.
Ask how the crediting formula, surrender period, rider charges and income benefits work together. Explore retirement-income considerations.
Bank CD: compare deposit protection and access
A qualifying bank CD can have FDIC insurance within applicable limits, a stated term and an early-withdrawal penalty. Tax treatment differs from a nonqualified annuity. Compare access, deposit-insurance eligibility, taxes and renewal rules alongside the quoted rate. A MYGA is not a bank CD and is not FDIC insured.
All three choices have terms to read. Anil explains insurance products and can coordinate questions for your tax or investment professional; this comparison is not advice to replace an existing account. Read the NAIC annuity buyer’s guide.
Ask these questions before choosing a rate
- Is this exact product available in my state, at my age and premium amount?
- What amount can I withdraw each year without a contract charge, and when does that start?
- What surrender charges or MVA could apply if my plans change?
- What happens at the end of the guarantee period? Is there a new surrender period?
- How would taxes, required distributions or replacing an existing contract affect me?
For F&G Guarantee Platinum, the reviewed carrier notice describes access to accumulated interest, subject to contract terms, and a 30-day window after the guarantee period to withdraw without surrender charges or MVA. A new guarantee and surrender-charge period can begin afterward. Do not assume these provisions apply to North American or Athene.
MYGA questions, answered simply
Is a MYGA the same as a bank CD?
No. A MYGA is an insurance contract, with insurer-backed guarantees, contract withdrawal rules and different tax treatment. Compare the full terms rather than the rate alone. It is not FDIC or NCUA insured.
Does “guaranteed” mean I cannot lose money?
No. Guarantees rely on the issuing insurer. Early surrender, withdrawals, applicable adjustments and taxes can reduce what you receive. Inflation can also reduce purchasing power.
Is MYGA growth tax-free?
Generally, growth in a nonqualified annuity is tax-deferred rather than tax-free; taxable distributions are generally ordinary income. A 10% additional federal tax may apply to taxable amounts withdrawn before age 59½, unless an exception applies. An annuity inside an IRA does not add another layer of tax deferral. Review your circumstances with your tax professional.
Should I choose the highest rate?
Rate is one factor. Also compare the commitment period, insurer, liquidity, state availability, death benefit and renewal provisions. A higher rate may come with terms that do not meet your needs.
Does requesting information bind me to a contract?
No. Calling, booking or sending an inquiry does not purchase an annuity, bind coverage or lock a rate. Any application, funding and issuance steps are separate and subject to carrier requirements.
